help / faq for drivers

What´s autostopp.net?

autostopp.net is a ride-sharing-agency via internet. It´s not longer necessary to do rides alone. With autostopp.net you can share your rides with other people.

To find passengers for a carpool just post your lift offers at autostopp.net. Students as well as commuters can post their single ride offers or their regular rides (4 weeks in advance) when they do the same way every day. posts can include return journeys as well as stopovers.

The advantages of carpools are obvious. First, you can share costs with your passengers, second, you do a big contribution to protect our environment and third and last but not least, you meet people "in real life" and maybe, some friendships will be the result.

Which types of users are there at autostopp.net?

There is simple searching users and registered users. If you just searching a ride at autostopp.net, without beeing registered, you see the details of the ride but you don´t see the contact data of the posting passengers.

As a registered user you can search as well, see the details of the ride and in addition, you see the contact data of the posting users as well. And all of this FREE OF CHARGE !!!

With the contact data of the passenger you can get easy and fast contact to posting passengers, either by email or by mobile phone.

How much do users have to pay to use autostopp.net?

NOTHING !!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING !!! NO COSTS FOR USERS AT ALL !!!

The user is charged absolutely nothing to benefit from the service of autostopp.net. The webpage is financed by selling online-advertisments and by selling the technology to other internet-platforms and websites.

How much can I charge passengers for the ride?

In principle this amount to charge for a ride is free negotiable. It should be a contribution to the fuel consumption. Of course it depends as well to the way (e.g. if you need to do some stopovers to pick up or bring people) and to the amount of passengers. As rule of thumb use 0,05 Euro per kilometer.

Some price suggestions:

London (GB) - Edinburgh (GB), 650 km, 25-30 Euro
Dublin (IRL) - Cork (IRL), 260 km, 12-14 Euro
Brighton (GB) - Southhampton (GB), 100 km, 4-6 Eur

How to increase safety?

To "hitchhike" via internet is definitly much more safety than to thumb up a ride. But there is still possibilities to increase safty.

  • Contact your passengers on their mobile. With a telephone call you get a first impression how your potential passengers are.
  • At least you should call them once to make sure that their mobile number is right and exisiting.
  • Inform other people about your ride with passengers. Tell them how many passengers you take with you, the ride data (e.g. time of departure, way, approx. arrival time) etc. Best would be to inform third people about the mobile numbers of your passengers.
  • Appoint a Meeting Point where a lot of people is around e.g. railway stations, petrol stations or motorway service areas.
  • If you appointed a ride, all details are checked, you had a good first impression of your passengers and this good impression is gone when you see the passengers first time, don´t take them with you. Safety should have higher priority then anything else.

Forgot password? What to do?

At the mainpage you find the menu point password? Press it, insert your email adress you have registered with and we send you a temporary password. Login with this temporary password and change it to a self chosen password at menu point edit login data (you see this menu point when you are logged in).

How to use an existing post again?

You allready posted a ride for a special way in the past and you want to do this ride again on a different date? Yes? There is an easy and fast possibility to do so.

Just use menu point edit existing lift offers/requests. Then select the ride you want to post again. Click the link add new post for this ride, and enter the data of the new ride.

With the link back you come back to the existing posts for this way. Now you can delete the old ride or you leave it to use it for further postings in future.

Of course, you can use this menu point only for deleting posted rides as well.

What is "area search" and how does it work?

Area search is the possibility to search for rides in the immediate environs of the departure and the destination city.

E.g. you search for a ride from Basel (CH) to Berlin (D). In the search mask of the mainpage you can define, how many kilometers arround Basel and Berlin autostopp.net shall search as well. This defines how many results you will get. Searching e.g. 50 kilometers arround departure and destination city autostopp.net will output you results like Mulhouse (F) - Berlin (D) or Freiburg (D) - Potsdam (D) if offered as well. This means, you can enter your exact departure and destination city for your search because autostopp.net is searching in the defined circumcircle as well.

The area search is working across country borders as well because "we bring europe together"! We imported approx. 25.000 european towns, villages and cities inclusive their Longtidude and Latitude. For some european countries we imported places down to 1.000 inhabitants.

Why to post stopovers?

You can increase the probability to find passengers by entering stopovers. Doing so you can find passengers for stages of your total ride.

Because you might leave your original way every stopover increases your effort as well. Keep this in mind when you calculate passengers fees.

Riding from London (GB) to Edinburgh (GB) there is a couple of possible stopovers. Birmingham (GB), Lancaster (GB) or Carlisle (GB) could be such stopovers. If you post e.g. Birmingham (GB) and Carlisle (GB) as stopovers following rides will be posted at autostopp.net as well: London (GB) - Birmingham (GB) , London (GB) - Carlisle (GB) , Birmingham (GB) - Carlisle (GB) , Birmingham (GB) - Edinburgh (GB) and Carlisle (GB) - Edinburgh (GB) .

PLEASE NOTE: enter the stopovers in the order of your driving direction. That means for the way from London to Edinburgh:
1. stopover is Birmingham and 2. stopover is Carlisle. If you enter them in reverse order a ride from Carlisle to Birmingham would be posted and shown to passengers even though you are not driving this direction. In this case the wrong passengers contact you.

Why keep postings up to date?

You can save time and money if you keep your postings up to date. Passengers or drivers contact you because of seeing your free seats or your ride request. Pls keep the amount of free seats and ride requests up to date to avoid senseless contacts.

Why keep personal data up to date?

To make sure that others can contact you, keep your personal data up to date. You can edit your valid email address (the email address you login as well) at menu point edit login data. To edit your mobile number go to menu point
edit profile.
